Aiming to help people in low-income communities lead healthier lives, Gary Salmirs runs the Ironwill Wellness Program, established in 2010 at the Mercy Center in South Bronx, New York City. Today, as the United States suffers from an obesity crisis, Gary Salmirs continues to aid residents of inner cities nationwide.
Salmirs works with a chef, pediatrician, professor, consultant, and food supply expert to instruct women from urban areas on how to maintain improved diets for their families. Offering farmer’s market and hiking field trips, a food lecture series, and cooking classes, Gary Salmirs teaches women about child nutrition and health issues, as well as ways to save time while preparing meals. His program also features an open forum where graduates can discuss problems or share recipes, a day in the park for families to connect, clubs where graduates can walk together, and group trips to the grocery store to find healthy food. He also gives participants a health book translated into Spanish, and employs a translator at every class so that all information makes sense. Additionally, Salmirs ensures that women can continue in the program by offering additional classes for graduates.
Gary Salmirs and his colleagues hope that women graduate from the class with an understanding of how to make healthy eating habits a part of their daily lives. As founder and CEO of the Ironwill Foundation, which facilitates the Ironwill Wellness Program, Gary Salmirs plans to expand the program to include children and teenagers. The Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, resident also funds organizations that fight debilitating diseases.
